Micromet is an Italian manufacturer of custom metal parts for leather goods, based in Arezzo at the heart of the Tuscan goldsmithing district. We produce bespoke hardware — buckles, rings, hooks, chains, clasps, decorative trims and bag closures — for luxury brands, designers and small leather goods producers worldwide.
This page outlines what we make, the materials and processes we work with, and how a project with Micromet typically unfolds, from the first technical brief to serial production.
What we make: a complete range of custom metal parts for leather goods
We design and manufacture metal hardware for handbags, belts, wallets, small leather goods and travel pieces. Every component is engineered around the application: visible structural parts, decorative elements, fastening systems or brand-identification details all require different choices of material, finish and production process.
Buckles, clasps and closures
Belt buckles, bag closures, twist-locks, magnetic snaps, push-locks and turn-locks. These are typically the most visible metal components on a leather product and the ones where finish consistency and mechanical performance need to align.
Rings, hooks and connectors
D-rings, O-rings, swivel hooks, spring snap hooks, strap connectors and dee-loops. Load-bearing parts where the relationship between material strength, finish protection and dimensional tolerances directly affects the final product’s perceived quality.
Studs, rivets and decorative trims
Reinforcement components for stress points, plus a wide range of decorative studs, conchos, eyelets and surface elements. Often customised with brand engraving or proprietary shapes.
Chains, snap closures and metal logo plates
Bag chains (rolò, gourmette, marina and custom links), small snap closures for wallets and key holders, and engraved metal logo plates. For more detail on the structural and aesthetic role of these parts in handbag construction, see our dedicated page on metal components for bags.

Materials and finishes for luxury leather hardware
The choice of material and finish is a project decision, not a default. We discuss it with the client at the brief stage, balancing aesthetic intent, mechanical demands, regulatory constraints (nickel release, REACH compliance) and budget.
Metals we work with
- Brass: our most common base for high-end leather hardware. Excellent machinability, fine detail rendering and compatibility with the full range of galvanic finishes. Strong choice when finish quality is the priority.
- Zamak (zinc-aluminium alloy): ideal for complex geometries, bas-reliefs and decorative components produced by die-casting. Common in fashion hardware where intricate shapes are required.
- Stainless steel: selected when corrosion resistance, structural strength or hypoallergenic behaviour are critical — often for outdoor or sport-influenced leather goods.
- Aluminium: used when weight reduction matters, particularly for large decorative components or oversized chains.
- Bronze, gold and silver alloys: available for premium and high-jewellery applications on leather goods.
All alloys we use are nickel-free and compliant with EU REACH regulations.
Surface finishes and platings
Our in-house galvanic finishing covers the full spectrum required by luxury fashion: gold and rose gold plating, ruthenium, gun metal, palladium, silver. We also work with PVD coatings for higher wear resistance and finish stability over time. Anti-tarnish treatments and protective lacquers complete the offering for pieces destined to long-term use.
Manufacturing processes available in-house
We run three main production processes under one roof, which means design, prototyping, tooling, production and finishing can be coordinated as a single workflow rather than handed across multiple suppliers.
- Lost-wax casting — our core process for detailed and complex geometries in brass, bronze and silver alloys. Suitable for medium and large series where dimensional consistency and fine detail are required.
- SLM / DMLS metal additive manufacturing — Selective Laser Melting and Direct Metal Laser Sintering allow us to produce prototypes and small series directly in metal, with no tooling investment. Particularly useful for rapid iteration on new shapes and for limited capsule collections.
- Galvanic and PVD finishing — fully in-house, with controlled cycle parameters to ensure repeatability batch after batch.
For the early stages of a project, we typically combine rapid prototyping with traditional sampling to validate form, feel and assembly behaviour before committing to production tooling.
From brief to delivery: how we work with leather goods brands
Our typical workflow is structured around five phases:
- Brief and feasibility review — we accept 2D drawings, 3D CAD files (STEP, IGES) or physical samples. Our technical team reviews feasibility, dimensions, mechanical requirements and target finish.
- 3D design and engineering — when the brief is conceptual, we develop the technical 3D model together with the client. Material, process and finishing strategy are defined at this stage.
- Rapid prototyping and sampling — first samples in metal, produced via additive manufacturing or pilot casting. Aesthetic, ergonomic and assembly checks happen here.
- Pre-series and tooling — once the sample is signed off, tooling is prepared (for cast or stamped components) and a pre-series batch confirms process stability.
- Production and finishing — serial production with in-process quality control, galvanic or PVD finishing, final QC and packaging according to client specifications.
Lead times depend on part complexity, volume and finish, and are confirmed at quotation. For projects requiring fast turnaround on prototypes, our additive route can deliver samples in days rather than weeks.
Working with luxury brands, designers and small leather goods producers
Micromet operates as the metal hardware partner for fashion houses, leather goods makers and independent designers. Our positioning is built on three principles:
- Italian craftsmanship, with all production phases — design, casting, finishing, QC — handled in our Arezzo facility, within the Tuscan goldsmithing district that has supplied luxury fashion for decades.
- Flexibility on volumes: we work with both established maisons producing large seasonal collections and emerging brands with smaller order quantities. Pre-series and capsule volumes are accessible to us thanks to our in-house additive manufacturing.
- Confidentiality and exclusivity: NDA-protected collaborations are our standard mode of work. Designs developed for one client are not replicated for others.
We serve clients across Italy, France, the rest of Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States and selected markets worldwide. For a wider overview of our positioning, see our page on Italian metal accessories manufacturer for fashion brands.
Frequently asked questions
What materials do you use for custom metal parts for leather goods?
We work primarily with brass, zamak (zinc-aluminium alloy), stainless steel and aluminium. Brass is our most common choice for high-end leather hardware due to its workability and finish quality. Zamak suits complex shapes and decorative components. Stainless steel is selected when corrosion resistance and structural strength are required. All materials we use are nickel-free and hypoallergenic.
Do you support low MOQs (minimum order quantities)?
Yes. Our production flexibility allows us to handle both prototypes and small pre-series alongside larger seasonal volumes. For sample runs and capsule collections, we use rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing to keep MOQs accessible. Volumes are discussed case by case based on part complexity and finishing requirements.
Are your metal parts nickel-free?
Yes. All our metal parts for leather goods are produced with nickel-free, hypoallergenic alloys, in compliance with EU REACH regulations on nickel release for items in prolonged skin contact. We can provide material certifications upon request.
Which manufacturing processes do you use?
Our in-house processes include lost-wax casting for detailed and complex geometries, SLM / DMLS metal additive manufacturing for rapid prototyping and small series, and a full range of galvanic finishings (gold, rose gold, gun metal, ruthenium, PVD coatings). Every project is engineered around the most suitable process based on geometry, volume and surface finish required.
Can you produce custom designs or do you offer design support?
Both. We work from customer drawings, 3D files (STEP, IGES) or physical samples, and we also provide in-house 3D CAD design support for brands that need to translate a concept into a manufacturable component. Our technicians review feasibility, propose process optimisations and define the production pathway before tooling.
